The Nigerian Legion is a statutory Body established by the Act of Parliament of 1964 amended by the Nigerian Legion Interim Management Decree 25 of 1977, and further amended by Nigerian Legion Decree No. 37 of 1988, Federal Republic of Nigeria official Gazette No. 64 vol. 75 dated 30th September, 1988 as amended.

It is an offshoot of the armed forces, comprising the Army, Navy, and Air force, established to cater to the welfare of the ex-servicemen who fought in the Wars that Nigeria had participated in, and to promote the spirit of comradeship among the living ex-servicemen and service personnel in the Military.

The Decree establishing the Nigerian Legion (Decree No. 37 of 1988) empowers it to establish, manage, control, and regulate the conduct and affairs of the Corps of Commissionaire or any other organization serving as an auxiliary arm of the Nigerian Legion.
